What is On-Page SEO?

On-page optimization is the process of making your website’s content and structure more search engine-friendly.  This can involve everything from optimizing meta tags and title tags, to improving site speed and user experience.

The key components of on-page SEO are:

  • Meta titles and descriptions
  • Subheadings
  • URLs and slugs
  • Schema markup
  • Images and video
  • Written content
  • Keywords
  • Links
  • Usability
  • Accessibility

A great SEO strategy can be broken down into two main chunks: on-page SEO and off-page SEOOn-page optimizations can significantly impact how search engines interpret, display, and rank pages and blog posts on your website. This ultimately affects its visibility (impressions) and conversion (clicks) in search results.

On-page optimization isn’t just about making technical tweaks and adjustments. It’s also an opportunity to enhance the user experience of the website. It makes the site more user-friendly, more engaging and this, in turn, will increase conversion rates.  On-page optimization can be an incredibly rewarding process, but can also sometimes be a complex and time-consuming process

Follow our checklist for each page on your website to improve the website’s relevance, usability, and “crawlability” for search engines and users.

How do you use meta title tags for on-page SEO?

Use a tool like Yoast SEO to give each page on your website a meta title tag that is unique, descriptive, between 50-60 characters long, and that uses your target keyword.

How do you optimize a meta title for SEO?

The meta title tag needs to be unique for every single page or post. It acts as the title of the page and is often identical to the H1, URL, etc. It tells people exactly what this page is and what isn’t about in just a few words. The title tag should also include the target keyword for that page. It applies to all types of pages – posts, webpages, product pages, custom fields pages, etc.

How long should a meta title be?

An SEO optimized meta title should be 50-60 characters long. Why? The meta title is what shows up when someone searches for and finds your page on Google. If it’s more than 60 characters, it will get cut off. If the title of your page is short, it’s common to follow it with the title of your website. For example “Guide to SEO – SEO Pro Geeks”

How do you use meta descriptions for on-page SEO?

Use a tool like Yoast SEO to give each page on your website a meta description that is unique, descriptive, between 120-160 characters long, and that uses your target keyword.

How do you optimize a meta description for on-page SEO?

You can optimize a meta description by ensuring that it’s descriptive, unique, and includes the target keyword for that page. The description should be compelling and accurate. It should tell people in a few sentences what they can expect to learn on this page. A meta description should appear on every type of page on your site, including posts, web pages, and ecommerce product pages. It also needs to be the correct length.

How long should a meta description be?

An SEO optimized meta description should be 120-160 characters long. Why? The meta description will appear in search engine result pages underneath your meta title. It provides searchers with more context about the page they might click on. If it’s too long, they won’t be able to read the entire thing, especially on mobile. Take a look at the screenshot above; it’s too long and there’s a “read more” link at the end.

If you use WordPress and Yoast to publish content, the bottom of your edit page will provide you with sections to add meta titles and descriptions. They will even help show you what length would be good for each.

How do you use headings and subheadings for on-page SEO?

The H1 heading and subsequent subheadings must appear on your page in the proper sequence in order to be optimized for SEO.

How do you optimize the H1 tag for on-page SEO?

The H1 tag – the title of the page – can only appear once and should contain the target keyword for the page or post. There can only be one H1 on every page because it is the main idea for the webpage. Google uses it to determine what the content is about. If there are multiple H1 tags, the purpose of the webpage is more unclear.

With a CMS like WordPress, whatever you name your post or webpage will automatically become the H1 tag. It should contain the target keyword for the page or post so that it ties in to the overall keyword strategy of the content.

The H1 tag is important because it’s like your first impression. It’s what users will use to understand what this page is for. It should be short, yet descriptive. For example, “About Our Company” is just fine for the H1 for an about page. But for a blog post, “How to Update WordPress Plugins” works because it’s more descriptive.

How do you optimize subheadings for on-page SEO?

Subheading tags (H1, H2, H3) need to appear in order, appear every 200-300 words, and occasionally feature your target keyword in order to be well optimized.

With webpage content, body text is denoted as as “paragraph” text. Any titles – big or small – are denoted with subheading tags. They go in order: H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 etc.

How do you properly nest subheadings?

The key is to make sure they are always nested properly in numerical order. For example, after the H1, you can add as many H2s as you like. If you want to nest a bit of content under an H2, use an H3. You can go back to an H2 next, but you can’t skip from H2 to H4. And you can’t go backwards, using an H4 and then an H3.

How often should you use subheadings?

You should use subheadings on page content every 250 words or so. Subheadings break up the content and make it easier to read.  They are kind of like chapter titles for the content you’re creating.

How do you optimize URLs and slugs for on-page SEO?

Optimized page URLs are concise, descriptive, include your target keyword, and usually match the page title.

There are three different parts of a URL that you should know:

  • The domain is the first part of a linkk that is present for every page of your website. (“https://seoprogeeks.io”)
  • The slug follows the domain and indicates a new webpage or post (/guide-to-on-page-seo-optimization”)
  • A URL is both a domain and slug combined (“https://seoprogeeks.io/guide-to-on-page-seo-optimization”)

You choose your slug per page you create. Avoid using lengthy, confusing slugs that don’t provide any value. Slugs should also contain the target keyword for a page if possible. Usually they are identical to the page title; this makes things very clear for users. For example, notice that the slug of this page (“guide-to-on-page-seo-optimization”) is very close to the H1 title (“Your Guide to On-Page SEO Optimization”) We removed “your” to shorten the url a bit while still communicating the purpose of the page accurately.

How do you use Schema Markup to optimize for on-page SEO?

The page’s schema markup should be present and provide more information to search engines about the page’s content.

Schema markup can improve visibility and click rates for pages in search results in so many ways. You can add schema markup to a website with minimal technical knowledge and without paid tools. It allows you to feature your FAQs, product review rankings, business hours, and other useful information. For example, you can use local schema for “near me” search results.

What are the different types of schema?

  • Article/News Article
  • Product & Offer
  • Local Business
  • Organization
  • Event
  • FAQ
  • Recipe
  • How-To
  • Person
  • Breadcrumb

How do you optimize Content for SEO?

SEO optimized written page content should be organized, easy to understand, high-quality, informative, authoritative, and engaging. Write content for the user, not just for search engines, to provide real value. Hint: Using AI improperly or too frequently can result in boring and “spammy” content. People can tell when your content is genuine!

When planning content, make sure the relationship between all your web pages is intentional and clear. Use methods like the Pillar/Cluster method to make the best use of your time.

What does SEO optimized content include?

  • Well-researched and accurate
  • Based on user search intent and goals
  • Is rich in keywords and related topics
  • Comprehensive, yet easy to skim
  • Contains visuals aids such as images and video
  • Features links (internal and external) in order to provide context and credibility

What is the ideal length of an SEO optimized post or page?

Aim for at least 500-1000 words per page, depending on the subject. Use this as a guide. When writing content, you want to ensure that each page has enough content to fully cover the topic and answer the user’s questions – no more and no less.

How do you optimize content for AI search tools?

You can optimize content for AI search tools – both Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) – by using thoughtful and specific structures, language, wording, and organization. The need to optimize for AI search grows more and more every day.

Writing AI optimized content includes:

  • Answering questions quickly and directly
  • Using subheadings to ask questions and content for answering them
  • Making sure the language you use is concise and conversational
  • Incorporating schema to provide detailed context to the AI tools
  • Applying specific formatting to content like definitions, procedures, lists, and FAQ

how do you use keywords for SEO?

Take the time to research the phrases and questions that someone might use when searching for your website, then incorporate those keywords into your content. Start with a more general keyword, then use research tools to find longer and more specific key phrases. As you build your site and publish content, make sure that the target keyword and key phrases are used appropriately. Avoid overusing the keyword and stuffing it into the content. Make sure that you have a unique keyword focus per page.

Where should you use SEO keywords?

When optimizing a page for a keyword, it should be present in:

  • The title/H1 of the page
  • The slug of the URL
  • A few of the subheadings on the page
  • The meta title tag
  • The meta description
  • The content of the page
  • The title and ALT tags of present images
  • The anchor text of links that lead back to this page

How often should Your keyword appear in the written content?

The target keyword for a page should appear once every 200 words or so (about 2% of the total word count). They should appear naturally; Google penalizes websites that “stuff” their keywords in where they don’t belong.

What are the best practices for creating a keyword strategy?

A great keyword strategy starts with research, moves into planning, and then consistent execution.

  • Begin with search intent, not just what is popular or what you want to write about.
  • Make use of longer, more specific keywords that funnel back into a shorter, more general one.
  • Do not use the same target keyword on more than one page.
  • Use tools like Yoast, SEM Rush, Google Search Console, etc. to get an idea of keyword performance.
  • Use keywords naturally and in ways your audience understands.
  • Pay attention to density and difficulty. Consistently going after keywords that are too high competition or high volume can be a waste of time.
  • Stick with it – SEO takes time!

How do you Optimize Images for SEO?

To optimize images for SEO, you should format and compress each image in the best way possible. Proper formatting and compression can increase page loading speeds and help give more context to search engines.

Naming and labeling images with text is also important. An image’s file name, ALT text, and captions can be powerful places to not only incorporate keywords, but provide helpful context for an image that helps both humans and bots.

Why are Links important for SEO?

Search engines use links – internal and external – to understand your website within the context of your industry or community of similar sites. Every link is a way for you to tell search engines that you know your content well, that you refer to other good sources of information, and that other good sources refer to you.

It may seem counterproductive to direct traffic off your site with external links. However, linking to reputable sources to show you’ve done research and provide reliable information. It also makes you look authoritative to both bots and humans because you aren’t afraid of losing traffic.

What are best practices for using links on websites?

  • Every page on your site should have relevant internal links to other pages on your site. This doesn’t include the links that appear in your header and footer!
  • Every page should also have at least one external site. Cite sources and data, refer to other topics, link out to helpful resources, etc.
  • Use anchor text that is relevant and descriptive. Avoid links that read “Click here” or “Read More.” Instead, create links that have anchor text that describes the destination. It’s great if anchor text includes keywords!
  • Make external links open up in a new page or tab.
  • Ensure that links are underlined and maybe even a different color than the main body text. This helps people identify what is actually a link and what isn’t.
  • Remember that you can use images and buttons to link people to different places, too!

How are SEO and Accessibility Connected?

When you prioritize accessibility into your SEO strategy, you’re covering human usability and access elements that search engines also appreciate. An accessible website is an SEO powerhouse.  There are many overlaps between what makes a site great for users and search engine bots.

What web accessibility steps are good for SEO?

  • ALT text for images
  • Proper heading structures
  • Descriptive link/anchor text
  • Captions for videos
  • Optimized and thoughtful navigation
  • Keyboard accessibility
